the beauty of ordinary moments

john lennon once said that life is what happens while you are busy making other plans. So often we look to the future, plan that vacation, mark the calendar for a family weekend, yet in between these plans and schedules life does, in fact, happen. ordinary moments. moments that we so often take for granted; the stolen moments that come to us so quietly, yet leave an indelible mark on our memories. these everyday moments are the ones that build love and connection.

i recently spent the afternoon making jam with electra. it was splendid. it was better than trips to foreign lands, planned outings and fairytale dreams. it was real. a moment that just came upon us one weekend afternoon. it made me appreciate the everyday moments as we undertake a journey, rather than focusing on any particular destination.

i am so blessed to be raising these amazing kids. hard as it can be at times, it is the everyday moments that i will remember. kids laughing over family guy, giggling over miss pronounced words, arguments over knotted shoes on the way to school; these are the moments that build a foundation of connectedness as a family. ordinary moments. the accumulation of moments are far better than any one moment and they outshine the spectacular.

i am the luckiest mom in the world and eagerly await the next ordinary moment that comes along.
